TRANSCRIBED FROM THE MENA WEEKLY STAR DECEMBER 13, 1917 P. 4
Carl E. Anderson.
On U. S. S. Minnesota.
c/o Postmaster, New York, N. Y.
Mrs. Ira Anderson:
I am feeling fine all the time, but had my first experience of seasickness on the Main and, believe me, I sure was sick for three days, but had to shovel coal just the same. I was on the Main three weeks, and have been transferred to the U. S. S. Minnesota, and think I will like it better.
I have been rated 2nd class fireman, and you asked about what a fireman gets. Fireman 3rd class get $36 a month, 2nd class $41, 1st class $48.
I sure would like to come home Christmas, and see everybody, and my girl.
I got a box of candy from Idus and Ferna which was fine. I sure would like to have been there for that Thanksgiving dinner, but I had all the turkey, cake and pie I could eat on the Maine, but would have enjoyed it better at home.
I haven’t received a single copy of The Star since I left Newport. Please see them about it, and tell them I can’t live without it. I made out an allotment to send $20 every month to you and anytime you need money you are welcome, and what you don’t use you can put in the bank and save for me, for I’m coming home some day and it would come in handy.
Address mail to U. S. S. Minnesota, c/o Postmaster, New York.
Well, I will close and don’t forget to write a long letter.
From your son.
Somewhere at sea.
NOTES: This is a partial letter written to his mother. Carl Eldridge Anderson was born on January 1898 and died on January 29, 1926 at Kansas City, Missouri. He is buried in the Pinecrest Memorial Park at Mena, Arkansas.
