TRANSCRIBED FROM THE DAILY ARKANSAS GAZETTE SEPTEMBER 10, 1918 P. 7
How is everything getting along back in God’s country? Guess you are reading about how we are knocking hell out of the Germans here in France. However, the only Germans I have seen so far are prisoners, but plenty of them. Wish you could come over and see the finish of this scrap. But you should get over here not later than next spring if you expect to see the end. The lucky German who survives the winter will only live to meet his fate early next year.
Come over and have a beer with me. The water is hardly fit to drink in this country, so we use beer.
NOTES: This partial letter was written by Elmer Cleo Arnn to his friend Sam A. Sanders of the W. F. Bridewell Company of Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born on September 28, 1895 in Sidney, Arkansas and died on December 21, 1955 in Memphis, Tennessee. He is buried in the Memphis National Cemetery in Memphis. His military headstone identifies him as an Arkansas, Field Clerk AGD serving in World War I.
