TRANSCRIBED FROM THE BRINKLEY ARGUS NOVEMBER 30, 1917 P. 1
Washington, D. C., Nov. 24, '17
Mr. Wm. B. Folsom. Brinkley, Ark.
Dear ARGUS MAN:
As a subscriber of the "dear old ARGUS" I'm writing to ask you to send me a statement of my account so that I may pay up tho' next year in advance. I'm interested in the country around Brinkley yet, even if I am in the service of Uncle Sam. I remember most kindly my friends there.
Since July 25th of this year I've been in the U.S. Navy and am now serving on board the President's ship, U.S.S. Mayflower. The Mayflower is a splendid little vessel and I'm glad indeed to be able to serve my country in this branch of the service.
My rating in the service is as I enlisted, i. e. Machinist Mate, Second Class and I'm doing real well. I'm anxious to hear from my friends back home and hope that I may have the ARGUS come to me regularly to this address
Wm. N. Belk, M.M. 2nd C.
U.S.S. Mayflower
Washington, D.C,
Will write again soon and send a letter for the ARGUS.
NOTES: William Newton Belk was born in Portia, Arkansas on April 14, 1893 and died on June 13, 1982. He is buried in the Ft. Myers Memorial Gardens in Ft. Meyers, Fla. He enlisted on June 25, 1917 and was discharged on February 20, 1919. He was serving on President Wilson’s ship, Mayflower.
