TRANSCRIBED FROM THE ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT SEPTEMBER 9, 1918 P. 7
I am O.K. and never felt better in my life. I have been drilling very hard every day, but we sure get a very good swim each night, so you see we have plenty of opportunity to keep clean.
Tell Marguerite V ------to write, but not to expect any answer. Tell everyone to write as it is about all the pleasure we have. A letter is something to look forward to and feel sorely disappointed if we do not receive one. This country sure is beautiful, but tobacco is very scarce and hard to get. We have all the wine we want and it it very cheap--10 francs for a quart of champagne, which is $1.80 in American money. Whatever else you do, do not forget to write.
NOTES: Herman V. Bennett was writing to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Bennett. He was serving in the 464th Pontoon Train. He was born on December 10, 1899 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He sailed for France on July 14, 1918 from Philadelphia, on the ship Orita.
