Dear Mr. Williams:
Just to let you know that we are leaving today for some place in France. Tell everybody goodbye. I am with Co. A., 525 Engineers. I have been promoted to sergeant. Good Luck to everyone.

NOTES: Cpl. Walter D Berry was born on May 20, 1889 in Clinton, KY and died on September 19, 1953 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He is buried in the West Lawn Cemetery in Jonesboro. His military headstone identifies him as an Arkansas, Cpl. serving in the 525 SVC Bn. Engr. Corps in World War I. Before he was transferred to the 525th he served as a Sergt. in the National Guard. He was described as being of medium height and weight with brown eyes and dark brown. He sailed for France with Company A of the 525th onboard the Martha Washington on July 10, 1918 He returned with the same company and unit onboard the Orizaba leaving Brest, France June 25, 1919.
