TRANSCRIBED FROM THE MENA WEEKLY STAR AUGUST 8, 1918 P.3
Mr. V. W. St. John, Mena, Ark.
Dear Sir and Friend:
Thot that I’d drop you a line to let you know that I am still in the land of the living, and temporarily on duty in Kansas City at the Navy Recruiting Station, “boning” hard for my commission for Ensign in Uncle Sam’s navy, (in addition to my recruiting work in the main office).
We are taking about 1000 men per week and trying to get 225,000 more men, and it is some job. Will be here about sixty days when I go to sea.
Tell the young men in Mena that there are good openings, especially as aviation mechanics, and not much knowledge required other than knowing how to describe action of a motor while running and a trifle about magnets. If any of the boys are interested they can write me for information.
Guess the Lyric is still getting war tax for Uncle, Sam, eh? Give her a send off when you can.
Yours sincerely,
S. H. Blair
NOTES: Blair was writing from Kansas City.
