TRANSCRIBED FROM THE BATESVILLE DAILY GUARD OCTOBER 22, 1917 P. 1
Dear Father and Mother:
We know that oftimes your hearts are made heavy as you think of your boys being away from home companions and friends.
It may seem to some that this is all uncalled for. I am not only willing to give my time to this enterprise, but my life if need be, and firmly believe that we shall never have another opportunity to gain much honorable advancement for our country. Nor shall we do so much for the cause of the world’s progress, never have another opportunity to defend the liberty that mankind has so far gained against the attacks of the enemy.
Who would deprive us of liberty and set the whole world back some centuries?
You should be proud that you have sons willing to answer the call of their country, when their country so badly needs them.. If America ever needed men it is now.
Our nation is engaged in the bloodiest war the world has ever known.
Today as never before we are fighting for the maintenance of freedom that is ours, purchased by the blood of our forefathers. They fought and gained that which made the following generations free.
Are we, the young men of today any better than were they? No. We, too, umust fight if we expect to have a free country; free not only while we live, but for the coming generations.
