TRANSCRIBED FROM THE BENTON COURIER AUGUST 15, 1918 P. 2
I am going to take the time and pleasure to write a few lines to the folks at home and let them know that I am still alive and doing my bit in the United States Navy. I hope all the folks at home are well.
I like the Navy fine. I would like to get where we could take a shot at the Kaiser with one of our big guns. We could make him fly. We are doing our bit over here. I guess you all get a great many reports from this place for it is a great place or has been before the war and will be after the war.
Recently I was reading a piece in a Little Rock paper where the people of Saline county were going to hold memorial services for Johnnie Johnston of Mt. Carmel, who was the first boy from Saline county to fall for his country. I also noticed where you folks were going to have a service flag for the boys who have gone from there. I am sure glad to have my name on the flag. My home is at Bryant. I am proud that I am able to do my bit for my country, and I would like to say that we should be doing something to help win the war.
I enlisted in the Navy July 30, 1917, and will sure be glad when this cruel war is over and we will be allowed to return to our dear homes for whom we are fighting. May Old Glory fly high above forever and ever in peace and in freedom for our country that we love so dear.
I get a letter from my dear old brother very often telling me about the boys who have gone to France. I think all the boys should write to their mothers. I know that there is no one like my good mother and I love her dearly. I hope to return to her some day when this war is over with honors. I pray that God will be with us all and help us to win this war. I hope and know that all the boys of Saline county will do their bit in this war.
I hope this letter will find all the people in good health.
I have received a letter from Brother Nance of Mt. Carmel I.O.O.F Lodge. I am a member of the lodge there.
I hope the editor can spare the space for these few lines, for I am sure some of the people there will want to know where I am.
My best regards and best wishes to you all.
