TRANSCRIBED FROM THE LOG CABIN DEMOCRAT DECEMBER 13, 1917 P. 2
Editor Log Cabin Democrat:
Many people do not understand why we are at war, because bombs have not yet been dropped on any of our leading cities. Some people had rather be German slaves than to go to war.
Forty years ago the German empire set about making preparations to conquer the world, and we are at war because they came near to doing it. Germany is great on indemnities and staked out the United States to pay about 10 billion dollars and we are at war because we prefer to pay out the money to the Red Cross and liberty loans.
We are at war because the Germans used the French money to prepare for war. We are at war with Germany because they must not conquer France. We are at war because the Germans deliberately sunk a passenger ship with the loss of more than 100 American men, women, and children. We are at war with Germany to make the world safe for democracy.
We are at war with the German government for the same reason that we are at war with wolves and snakes. If we do not tame them they will kill us.
William Cargile
Co. E., 153rd Inf., Camp Beauregard, La.
NOTES: William Claude Cargile was born on August 20, 1890 in Quitman, Arkansas and died on July 31, 1963. He is buried in the Oakland Cemetery in Holland, Arkansas. His military headstone identifies him as an Arkansas Pfc. serving in the US Army during WWI.
