G. T. Chambers:
Dear Father:
I will answer your kind letter I received yesterday. I was more than glad to hear from you all and to know that you all were____. This leaves me well and feeling fine and hope it will find you all well, papa, this is a beautiful day here. We are having some pretty weather over here now, but can’t --- it may rain before night. It is dry one day and raining the next.
I am glad you have got some ____planted and I guess you all are ____right along now. Well this sure pretty over here now that spring is coming on and everything is looking good. I am staying in a very pretty town now and am close to crossing the river every day.
I am having a good time. I have to work hard and have got a good place to stay and a good captain. He sure is good to us boys. I sure wish that you could see this country. These French people are ____ways behind the people of the United States. They don’t seem to ____to stay up with the other countries. I haven’t seen anything growing on their farms but grapes and ___ and some other few little ____and I don’t think they know a thing about having two horses at ____unless they have got one in ___of the other and 2 wheel carts ____all the go over here. There are lots of old buildings and most all the buildings over here are stone buildings and most all stone walls. I haven’t seen but a few picket fences ____ I have been over here and these _____people sure do charge us boys high price for everything we buy from them. Just a common size ___ is 15 francs apiece. I have seen some of the boys pay 20 francs for a chicken and I have paid 6 francs for a dozen eggs. That is ____one ___in our money. I saw my first ____mill that runs by water power, ran without steam. It runs by water alone. I don’t see how it runs that way, but the water carries the big wheel over and over that makes the machine run. I wish you could see the old wooden shoes most of these French people wear. The French people all believe in the old timey religion. All of them are going by one church, they all believe in one church. I can’t explain it now, but will when I get home. I think we will be coming home before long. There are lots of boys leaving for home every day and sure will be glad when we get started for home. I suhe do want to see you all mighty bad. It seems like it has been a year since I saw you and it has almost been a year. Will close for this time. Will tell you all about it when I get home. Answer soon. As ever
