TRANSCRIBED FROM THE SPRINGDALE NEWS MAY 10, 1918 P. 3
Dear Mother
As you notice I’m at the range again. 8 of the best shots were picked from the Barracks and sent here for practice and the 4 best of them are to be sent to Paris Island to shoot in a competition of 7 teams from Charleston, Norfolk, Va., Quantico, Va., New Orleans, La., Pensacola, Fla., Miami, Fla..and Paris Island. S.C. I expect to make the team if I care to go and the major may compel me to go. At present I’m second man here and the leading man is only one point in the lead. He and I are leading by a large margin.
We are to be in Paris Island by the 5th of May. I expect Paris Island and Quantico will beat us but we are figuring on third place and I think it will be doing good if we get it.
No more now. Send all mail to the same old address.
Your loving son
Curtis.
NOTES: Curtis Christian is writing on April 29 to his mother Mrs. W. V. Christian of Springdale, Arkansas. Prior to the war Curtis had served in the Marine Corps for several years and participated in the conflict between the US and Mexico at Vera Cruz. A letter from his brother James is posted on this site.
