TRANSCRIBED FROM THE NEWPORT DAILY INDEPENDENT SEPTEMBER 17, 1918
Inclosed you will find money order for the Independent. I have been receiving the paper from the folks at home, but in order not to miss an issue am subscribing for it.
Soon after we Jackson county boys arrived here, the first question that one asked the other would be “have you received the Newport Independent?” so you see the boys in the service, as well as the folks at home, know that the Independent is the best county paper we have. All the boys are enjoying their work here in the great Northwest.
A.B. Coe

Vancouver, Washington
NOTES: Albert Benjamin Coe is writing to H. E. L McCollum. He was born in Tuckerman, Arkansas on April 17, 1894 and died in Newport, Arkansas on November 25, 1960. He is buried in the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Newport. (THERE IS A PHOTO OF HIM IN UNIFORM ON FINDAGRAVE.COM)
