TRANSCRIBED FROM THE ARKANSAS GAZETTE NOVEMBER 18, 1918 P. 2
I have not had my clothes off since September 25 and have not had a bath since August 8, so you can see what we have been going through . . . If I can hold up under the strain I stand a very good chance of being again promoted. Since being made a major I have been recommended for promotion three times, but nothing has come of it. I am ambitious and want to succeed, but have not the strength I used to have.
NOTES: This partial letter dated October 12 was written by Major Gilbert R Cook to his mother Mrs. Joe E. Cook of Texarkana, Arkansas. He was born on December 30, 1889 and died on September 19, 1963 at La Jolla, California. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. He had a long military career and was a Major General when he retired. A letter written by his brother Jim C. Cook is posted in Faulkner County.
