Dear Mama:
How was Xmas with you all? It was a lonesome, dull Xmas with me for I had just got out of the hospital and didn't get to sign the pay roll and that is the reason I didn't get to come home, but mama, I sure did enjoy the nice box you sent me, especially that fine cake, and if I didn't eat there are not any cows in Texas. Did Willie get to come home? She sent me a box of nice home made candy. Tell papa and the girls that as soon as I go to town I will send them a nice present. Mama, this is the first Christmas I have missed being at home to face you at the table, where you always try to make us all happy. I would have given anything to have been there, even if I did get my share sent to me I could have enjoyed it better if I could only have seen you all, but if nothing happens I will get to come in about two weeks or maybe before.
I like the life of a soldier fine. Will be glad when the time comes for us to go to France, for we must win this war and the sooner we win the sooner I will get to come home.
We have lots of amusements here, but I don't like here as well. I like my squad and all the officers fine, but I don't like the place. I haven't felt well since I have been here, but I sure do like to drill. Tell all my friends hello, and that I would love to see them. Tell Bro. Dean I sure am glad he got to stay in old Hamburg another year. Give him my best regards. Tell Cecil hello. Please answer soon for I always enjoy news from home.
