I am satisfied Conway has changed some since I went away, about three years ago. Should I have the opportunity to visit the Woodmen camp, I will gladly do so. I have been fortunate so far slightly wounded twice in line of duty, and I am thankful even for this.
At present, we are in dry dock, and have finished scraping and painting a ship, an awfully dirty job. Will probably sail for the states soon. Every one is anxious to get home, as we have been over here for quite a while. There are men who like this country, as it rains every day.
Speaking of the huns, we call them ‘square heads,’ there are lots of them working in the navy yards here. They have ‘P. G.’ painted on their backs. The look like varmints to me. Gee, how I would like to cave their domes in.
As to what we have been doing here, a lot of everything. The Prometheus is a repair ship, and a ‘mother’ ship to the torpedo boat destroyers, air station, army bzse and osme work for the French navy yard. We make and repair anything from a ring to a marine engine, and woodwork of all kinds.
NOTES: This partial letter was written by J. M. Daugherty of Conway, Arkansas. He was serving on the Prometheus. He was wounded twice while in the service. He was writing to Mr. F. M. Morgan, the clerk for the Conway Woodmen.
