My dearest mother and Sis:
At last at work and sure am enjoying it. We are stationed in Liverpool and like it better than any place we have ever been. The nurses’ home, is a beautiful home, steam heated, everything as comfortable as can be, and we are going to life it fine. We get the patients from the ships that come over. We had one fellow that was standing on deck and a big wave came and washed him around on deck, and broke his leg. It’s one of the worst things I have seen yet.
We have a little of everything. We go on duty at 7:45, and off at 8 o’clock, p.m. and have four hours off a day and one afternoon a week. I think that is doing fine.
Well I am gaining all the time. I weigh 125 pounds now. I have certainly enjoyed this summer. We have had a good time. It has been cool all summer, though. We have had good things to eat and plenty of fresh air all the time. Well we have had everything.
We moved from Salisburg Court here, Liverpool, Monday, and went on duty Tuesday. I sure do like the work. We all work together beautifully and get along fine.
Well, mother, I haven’t heard from you in some time. The mail is delayed some place. I am awful tired so will say good night and worlds of love.
Charlsie
American Red Cross and Military Hospital No. 4, Liverpool, England.
NOTES: Charlsie Davenport was writing to her mother Mrs. S. F. Davenport of Conway, Arkansas. She was recruited as a nurse in Little Rock, Arkansas and was serving in Hospital Unit T.
