TRANSCRIBED FROM THE BENTON COURIER OCTOBER 31, 1918 P. 2
Dear Mother:
I will write you a letter today as I haven’t heard from you. I am as well as ever, but was very much surprised to hear of Dad selling the old home place. What was his idea, Mother? How much did Dad invest in the Liberty Loan? I put all I had in it. Mine costs me at the rate of $25.29 a month, and my insurances costs $6.40 a month, and my salary a month is $38.40, so you see by the time I buy my other supplies I am busted, but I figured that I might need some money for clothes when I got out.
I will get my first bond January, 1919, and the others July, 1919, so I cannot possibly make leave until these are paid, though I would like mighty well to see you all and visit my new home.
Well, Mother, I will close. Answer soon and tell everybody hello.
Your son,
John David
P.S.: Tell me all about father’s deal when you write, and cheer up, Mother, for the war is coming to an end. Things look good.
NOTES: This letter was written by John David Dobbs to his mother Mr. John D. Dobbs. Dobbs was serving onboard the U.S.S. Vermont.
