TRANSCRIBED FROM THE POCAHONTAS STAR HERALD NOVEMBER 2, 1917 P. 8
Dear Editor and Friends:
I take pleasure in writing you all a few lines this morning to let you all know that I am feeling fine and like army life splendidly, especially the drills and big parades that we are in every two or three weeks.
We had a big parade last week in which several thousand soldiers marched. We sure did enjoy being in it. Then we had addresses by a number of business men of Alexandria, all of which were good.
We have just finished reading the Star Herald. We are always proud to get it, and to get the news from “Home, Sweet Home.” We are having a good time here in the camp and army life agrees with most of us. We are gaining from five to ten pounds per month. When I enlisted I weighed 126 pounds, I now weigh 143 pounds. What do you think of that for two monthe’ service in the camp life?
There are about twelve hundred Arkansas boys in this camp, and all seem to get better satisfied every day. With best wishes to my many friends in Randolph county, I am,
Yours very truly,
Asa Eaton,
Co. G. 154 Inf. 39th Div.
NOTES: Eaton is writing from Camp Beauregard, Louisiana. He was born on October 9, 1897 in Greene County Arkansas. He died on December 12, 1986 and is buried in the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould, Arkansas.
