TRANSCRIBED FROM THE LONOKE DEMOCRAT JUNE 27, 1918 P. 4
Norfolk, Va. June 29, 1918
To My Good Friends of Lonoke County:
Just a line dear editor to let my friends know the whereabouts of me.
I am now stationed at Norfolk, Virginia, at the U. S. Naval Air Station and I am now a first class machinist, after having served six months under instructions of my superior officers.
At first I was a landsman and after a machinist’s course, I was rated as second class on May 6th. I was transferred from Machinist Mate Aviation to Machinist mate Dirigible and I suppose my officer in command took pity n me and on June 15th recommended me and six others for first class machinists (Dirigible) and am now making Hydrogen for Dirigibles and kit balloons.
I am in the best of health and enjoying life as best I can, also I weigh 175 pounds, some gain from 148 pounds which I weighed when I enlisted.
I would like to come back for a while and see all of my good friends, but I know asa long as we fellows are fighting for our country that Lonoke County will do her part and will stay behind her boys through this awful struggle for Democracy and bring peace to all nations.
I am yours sincerely,
Emmett M. Coleman, M. M. L. C.
