TRANSCRIBED FROM THE ROGERS DEMOCRAT APRIL 10, 1919 P. 1
Feb. 10, 1919
Dear Sister and Family:
Will this fine night try and answer your letter just got which was dated Jan. 28th. Was certainly glad to get it as my mail comes rather scattering and far between; was the first one I got for a month. Got a card from mother. She was at brother’s when she wrote. She said Rosy was very sick. Did she have the flu? Seems like it is all over the world, even in Germany; it is not bad here; some few cases.
Well, we are in Germany yet: we are at Siershahn, a small place about 20 kilometers from Coblenz: I guess you know where that is.
Well, Sis, the Dutch treat us pretty nice: I guess it is because they have to. About 80 of us are billeted in a school house. It is a big house with 4 rooms: have steam heat most of the time and electric lights, so you see about what a fine home we have. Some are staying in houses with the square heads. I was in a house myself and they moved me.
I like this country fine, but I will come home the first chance I get, you bet. I don’t think it will be long; hope not, anyway. It rained today and we had school inside; didn’t drill. We don’t drill much anymore, mostly maneuvering; playing like we are going over the top. It sure does me good to get a letter from any one at home. I put in for a three-day pass tonight; am going over and buy some sweaters, as they haven’t got much in this town. It is a small place about like Rogers. I have brought some rings and a razor.
As the boys are boxing I can’t write so will say good bye. We have boxing, wrestling, fighting, drinking, card playing, Bible reading and a little writing all at the same time. Sure are having a time. Will see you some time soon, I hope.
Your brother to all,
Pvt. SAMUEL L. FELTON
