TRANSCRIBED FROM THE NEWARK JOURNAL JULY 18, 1918 P. 1
Somewhere in France, June 22
Will write you a few lines. This leaves me well and doing fine. How is everything in good old America by this time?
Everything over here is old fashioned. Some of the houses have grass roofs. But I have seen some very fine wheat and oats growing and the soil seems to be very fertile.
I have seen some German soldiers here who have been taken prisoners. Many of them look to be about the age of brother Carl.
If you folks at home could see what I have seen, you could see why Germany needs to be wiped off the map. I am wanting to go after the dirty devils.
I will close, with best wishes for all.
Your son,
Owen Fetzer
5th Co. Camp Beauregard June Replacement Troops, Infantry, A. E. F. care of Adjutant General’s Department, France.
NOTES: His name is Thomas Owens Fetzer. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Fetzer. He was born in Independence County on August 22, 1890 and died in West Memphis on November 22, 1972. He is buried in the Hopewell Cemetery at Cord in Independence County. There is a photo of him on findagrave.com
