TRANSCRIBED FROM THE CLARKSVILLE HERALD-DEMOCRAT OCTOBER 3, 1918 P. 4
On Active Service, A. E. F.
August 22nd, 1918
Dear Mother, Father, Brothers and Sisters:-
I will write you a letter as an answer to your letters I received while in front line trench. I was sure glad to hear from you and glad you were well. I am O. K. at present. I am back on rest again, but have had some experience. I am an “old soldier now”, I know all about war.
I am sending you a souvenir of France in a separate package. Let me know if you get it.
I saw Bob Sexton again. He had just been over here about a week and is O. K. but has not been in action yet.
While in action we went up against the Prussian Guards supposed to be the best division of the German army, but they did not interest us at all. They will have to get some better troops than those if they stop us.
Our division, the 4th, is considered one of the best divisions in France, and we have been mentioned for what we have done.
I hope I get back home by Xmas to spend my “Bond”.
Write me often. I get your mail right up on the “Front” just the same. I will write every chance I have and you do the same, so
Good Bye,
Pvt Henry O. Flake.
NOTES: Flake was born at Coal Hill in Johnson County on February 22, 1896 and died on November 1, 1960. He is buried in the Edgewood Memorial Park in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
