TRANSCRIBED FROM THE COURIER DEMOCRAT FEBRUARY 21, 1918 P. 4
The other day as Bruce and Williaimson were going to get some wood, the wind was rather brisk and Williamson’s hat blew off. He chased it about half a mile and began signaling back to Bruce that he had overtaken it. Of course the chase was fierce, for he had his hob-nails on and barely got back in time for mail-call--the joy of this life.
On New Years Day Corporal Freeman received a box from Russellville. His boys were very much delighted. As Cova brought it in he called his squad to attention, opened the box---and instead of something to eat, it was a toilet set! Wood said if a girl were to send him anything like that and him hungry as a wolf, he would send them a sour lemon..
Nail Reeves is so slow we can hardly see him move, except at “soppy” time and mail-call. But we can account for that---he is from Ozark, Co. K.
Freeman is a pretty good corporal, but he gets sick when it comes time to go get wood, for we have to carry our wood about a mile.
When the fighting is over and the war is won
And the Flag is waving free:
When the bells are ringing and the boys are singing
Songs in every key
When we all gather ‘round the old fireside,
And the fond mother kisses her son,.
We can all shout with victory, for
The war is won!
Squad 23.
Corp. Riley Freeman,,
Wood Williamson,
Everett Mays,
Noel N. Reeves,
Cova Bruce.
