TRANSCRIBED FROM THE DAILY ARKANSAS GAZETTE JANUARY 12, 1919 P. 30
I landed here September 5 and have been in one camp for three months, and have been in a demonstration company all the time. We have “taken” every hill and ravine within five miles of this place. Have bombed out trenches and gone over the top several times and through barbed wire entanglements. We have plenty of music—28 bands are stationed here and several Clark county boys are in the bands. We are looking forward to the home coming, but don’t know when it will be. For my part, I prefer walking if we have to cross the English channel on our return. I was some sick on my trip over here. Haven’t time to write much, but will tell the rest when I see you, which I hope will not be many months.
NOTES: Torance Freeman was writing to the mother, Mrs. G. I Freeman, of Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He was born on September 15, 1895 in Arkadelphia and died on February 5, 1985 in Arkadelphia. He is buried in the Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery in Shiloh, Arkansas. (THE NEWSPAPER MISPELLED HIS NAME AS TORRENCE)
