TRANSCRIBED FROM THE BATESVILLE DAILY GUARD JULY 28, 1917 P. 1
“Somewhere in France”
June 29.
This afternoon I will take the pleasure of starting a few words to you, and it will be only a few, as that is about all we are permitted to write. Am not allowed to tell where we are, how we got here, the name of the ship, where we landed, or what is in progress, so you see there is little to say. Can hardly write now, as the band is playing some swell rag-time music and I can hardly keep my feet still. Sure had a fine trip across the (Deleted by censor) and was not sent to Davy Jones’ locker. Sure was sick for the first few days out, but after that was over the rest of the voyage was fine. Believe me, boy. I am in some beautiful country. There are not words in the English language to describe it. Wish I could tell you all about what I have been since I left the states, but I can’t; hope to tell my experience to you face to face some time.
NOTES: This partial letter was written by Joe Garner of Calico Rock, Arkansas to his friend Mr. Sehaver. Garner enlisted with one of the first companies raised in Batesville, Arkansas.
