TRANSCRIBED FROM THE HELENA WORLD DECEMBER 21, 1917 P. 1
Camp Sherman, Ohio
Dec.5,1917.
My Dear Mother:
While sitting down thinking of you I thought I would write you a few lines to let you hear from me. This leaves me well and I hope you are the same. Say, Mary Jane, please answer this letter at once because I have something I want to send you. I don’t know just when we will move, but I think we will go to your old home – Alabama – and you will have to draw half my pay. I have been drafted in the army and have passed the physical examination. I am having a good time. Do not worry about me because I will be home some time after New Year if nothing happens. Where is Buddy and how is he getting along? Tell him I am having a good time. I can go to Cleveland every Saturday if I want to. We have shows and all kinds of music and games for a good time. We play football and have prize fights here at the camp. We do not have to buy anything but stamps. Kiss the baby and Mose for me. Mr. Powell, write me all the late news. Tell Liza hello and not to give me any big talk because I belong to Uncle Sam now. Tell Batres hello for me. How is Sarah getting along? This will be all. I am going to the show tonight. From your son,
LOUIS GILL
My address:
40th Co., 10th Mm.
Bldg. 25
Camp Sherman, Ohio.
NOTES: Gill was an African American soldier.
