TRANSCRIBED FROM THE VAN BUREN COUNTY DEMOCRAT SEPTEMBER 20, 1918 P. 2
Aug. 19th
Am in good health, feeling fine and having a very good time. Received both of your letters-one of July 15th and the other of July 22 yesterday. We don’t get our mail regularly, it comes in bunches though it is no fault of the army delivery, but I think due to the transports.
I had a letter from Dykes Hatchett Saturday. He is at Camp Dix near Trenton, N.J. I haven’t yet heard from Tom Lefler, nor I haven’t heard from Irvin in a long time.
I have received three copies of the Van Buren County Democrat and sure was glad to get them. Tell Mr. Oldham to keep that up and I will subscribe for the paper for ten years when I get back. Will write again the last of the week.
NOTES: This partial letter was written by Corporal John Talton Griggs to his father Judge Alfred M. Griggs of Scotland, Arkansas. He was born on December 29, 1894 in Scotland, Arkansas and died on December 7, 1976. He is buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Scotland. He enlisted on October 15, 1917 and was discharged on June 17, 1919.
