TRANSCRIBED FROM THE LAFAYETTE COUNTY DEMOCRAT AUGUST 16, 1919 P. 1
Dear mother and all:
As Huber and George were writing, thought I would put in a few lines. We are all well as I suppose they have already written, and holding down our part of the fighting line. Not having as much fun now as we had for a few days about a month ago. Huber and I have moved with George so we are staying together, always have plenty of money, francs I mean, plenty of good eats, and plenty of France’s good “cooties.”
The well here here is about 3,000 feet so we have found that it is cheeper to buy drinks than to pull the water from so deep a well, besides it makes us mean to drink this water, you can imagine why.
We have been having an easy time for the last few days, yesterday was the first day that I have not had to drive the car since I have had this position. Tell father I have found that the Dodge car is one of the best cars made. It is easy on tires, small fuel consumers and almost expenseless in every respect. I have driven this one about 12,000 miles and it has always been ready for service, pulls most any place in high gear.
This is all for this time as news is not very plenteous.
Your loving son and brother.
Barney.
P. S. Give everyone our best regards and tell them to write to us, we enjoy nothing more then we do a few lines from some one back home.
NOTES: Barney Hamm was born in January 1899 and died on January 3, 1957 at Hope, Arkansas. He is buried in the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Hope. A letter from his brother William is included on this site.
