TRANSCRIBED FROM THE COURIER-INDEX FEBRUARY 1, 1918 P. 1
I am leaving Tuesday night for foreign service. I received orders this morning and will go at once I think I am ready and know I am anxious to do my part. I think I am equal to any six Germans. Will write you when I get over there. I have a good thing---a sergeant mechanic, and that is the best thing in the service. The time has come when every able bodied man and boy can and should serve his beloved country. I go with a determination to come back home.
NOTES: This is a partial letter written by Sergeant Eugene George (Red) Hampton of Forrest City, Arkansas. He enlisted with the Motor Truck Company organized in Forrest City in the summer of 1917. He served in the 206th Coast Artillery of the Arkansas National Guard. He was discharged in 1919 and later served in WWiI where he attained the rank of Lieut. Colonel. He was also a member of the Arkansas State Legislature. This letter was written from Camp Beauregard, Louisiana just before he was sent to the east coast to be shipped overseas. Hampton was born on June 19, 1897 and died on February 24, 1970. He is buried in the Lee Heights Cemetery in Marianne, Arkansas.
