Mr. W. E. Harris, Cousin:
As I havent heard from you for some time, thought I would write you a few lines to-night. This leaves me O.K., hope you are the same. Winter has reached here; the ground has been frozen for two weeks and is covered with snow now; but today is___ the other day and I am sure ____ ____ his shadow so I guess spring will be here in two or three months. Are you working hard now, or is it too cold? I am drilling every day rain or shine, hot or cold; but I am man enough to stand it. I have hiked all over England and France with a pack that weighed eighty or ninety pounds; that is what made a man our o me. I have made 20 miles in five hours with a full pack.
I saw in the papers today where they were going to send three hundred thousand men home per month and that they would get all of us home in six months. If they do I will be home some time between now and August. I am going to the rifle range tomorrow, and that is the best job in the army. The last I time I was on the range there were 150 of us. We shot for three days and I made the best score that was made; and I am going to try to make the best score in this company this time. Well it is getting late, guess I had better close, so write soon and a long letter.
