TRANSCRIBED FROM THE NEWPORT DAILY INDEPENDENT AUGUST 28, 1918 P. 4
Somewhere in France,
Dear Old Pal:
Will write you a line as I have been knocked out for a time, but not long I hope. To my bad luck I was wounded on the 25th of July. I had been on the front for 62 days when I get bumped and---well, kid, a Hun put one in the hospital. But I have them bested, for I put several where they will never need a hospital, and believe me, it was a great pleasure to slay these Germans and walk over their dead bodies. You can also believe that we are doing that very thing. Well, tell Mr. Wyatt not to worry about his part of them for I tried to do just as he said, for I got his for him.
It’s about time for my nurse to bring my dinner and I am ready for it. I will close.
Yours very truly,
Enoch H. Heath.
American Expeditionary Force
NOTES: Enoch Harrison Heath was born in Tupelo, Arkansas on March 22, 1897 and died on September 22, 1964 in Malvern, Arkansas. He is buried in the Rest haven Memorial Gardens in Malvern. He enlisted on May 19, 1917 and was discharged on January 25, 1919. He was writing to his friend James Wyatt of Newport, Arkansas.
