TRANSCRIBED FROM THE MENA WEEKLY STAR MAY 2, 1918 P. 3
Camp Merritt N. J., April 21, 1918.
Mrs. S. A. Heath,
Dear Mother:
I will write a good-bye letter from America as we will be gone from here in a couple of days. I am not allowed to tell everything or I would be telling you when we leave, but when you get this I will be on my way over there. Now, mother, don’t worry about me, for I will be back by Xmas. So don’t get uneasy if you don’t hear from me for a month for it takes the mail a long time to go and come, but when you do get mail you will get lots of it at once. Gee, but we had plenty of chicken for dinner. They gave us a fine dinner. I guess it will be a long time before I get another like it.
Tell Frank that I am gone and tell him good-bye.
And, little mother, good-bye and God bless you, good-bye to Nellie and all my folks. Now I will write just as soon as I get there, and will bring back the kaiser’s ear for you.
Your loving son,
Homer Heath
NOTES: Homer Heath was born on December 12, 1895, in Mena, Polk County, Arkansas and died on March 16, 1968. He is buried in the Roselawn Memorial Park in Little Rock, Arkansas. By 1910 he was living with his widowed mother, Sarah Ann Heath in Polk County.
