TRANSCRIBED FROM THE ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT MAY 7. 1918 P. 2
Dear Uncle:
Have just received your letter with a surprise. Was not thinking of getting a letter from you. Have received a few letters from home lately but not many. Am always proud to get a letter from any of you. We boys are having a real good time. Plenty to eat and plenty of everything. I suppose though, it seems at times that we strike it hard. May be only imagination. We had a nice winter, some rain and some snow but not enough to call it a bad winter. We have had things as good as could be expected. I am sure that there is no one who is sorry that he is here. It can’t be expected for everything here to be as was at home, but it is as near home as can be.
Have not met any of the home boys yet, though hardly think that any of them have come across. They should be anxious to get across. They don’t know what they are missing. Have been in France since September. Have seen some of it and expect to see more soon. The time has passed off real fast. Have had a good time all the way along. Am in the best of health; this country agrees with me. Have gained 30 pounds since coming here. I may be a man yet (in size). Yours with best wishes and love to all. Your nephew,
RODNEY E. HERRING.
NOTES: Rodney Earl Herring was writing to his uncle Finus Murrah of Prescott, Arkansas. He was born on October 12, 1894 in Bodcaw, Arkansas and died on March 5, 1974 in Bodcaw. He is buried in the Union Cemetery in Bodcaw. He enlisted on April 21, 1917 and was discharged on March 28, 1919.
