TRANSCRIBED FROM THE LAFAYETTE COUNTY DEMOCRAT AUGUST 30, 1918, P. 1

Stamps, Ark
My dear Sister:
I hope you and family are well and enjoying life at home. I am in perfect condition with all the means of amusement and all the accomodations that I could wish. I think Tours is really the best place I have been in since enlisting last August.
We have several wonderful old cathedrals here. I haven’t been to church here yet, but did go once where I was before coming to Tours. The churches are about the prettiest things we can find in France. The largest cathedral here was built in the 11th Century, and the remains of a monastery are here which was built in the 3rd Century.
We see quite a few French soldiers here who come from the front, a lot of them from the recent drive and they all are in excellent spirits, and feel sure that the end of the war is near. I presume you noticed in the papers that the United States now has over a million soldiers over here. This has, of course, encouraged the French as nothing on earth could have done. They now feel that they have very little to lose further and everything to gain. The Americans and French are just like brothers, and the people all over France treat them as such.
Haven’t heard from home yet, but am in hopes of getting a letter in a day or two. Think I have my address straightened out with the postoffice now so that I will get it.
Love to Elmer and the boys,
Your devoted brother
Sgt. B. M. Hooper
NOTES: Sgt. B. Monroe Hooper of Stamps, Lafayette County is writing to his sister Mrs. Edna Bomar. He was born in 1894.
