Mr. Walter W. Raney,
McCrory, Ark.,
Dear Friend Raney:
Just a word to you as Editor with reference to Company A in compliance with your very thoughtful request for same.
All men are of course in full uniform and have more than the expected good appearance that accompanies uniform dress.
Health, briefly stated is excellent. There are none of the men who have contracted illness of any kind here. All the sickness we have is recuperation from sickness before we got to the Fort. All of the men who were sick at home and are of course gradually improving here are in much better shape than they were at home. There are only about four of such. The rest of the boys are physically fit, and in my opinion in better health than any of them ever enjoyed in their life.
We may be here at Ft. Roots a week and we may be here longer no way of knowing that. We now enjoy the distinction of passing by reviewing officers twice in this short time in better military style than any other organization up to date here, that of course may be a transitory honor. However, I want to tell you that Company A in my warped opinion has more good timber for better soldiers (good timber implies, clean living and honest endeaver), than any Company in the State of Arkansas, and you may expect to hear of some such reports coming from our work.
Our quarters are the ones formerly occupied by the 3rd. Company of the Officers Training Camp and are ideal. Sanitary and living conditions excellent. The men are falling right into line in maintaining exactly the state of affairs in our camp.
The first day the boys bought a Victrola. (By the way if some of our mutual friends have any Victrola records they are tired of hearing, we will be most grateful)
In conclusion let me say that vulgarity, uncleanliness of person or character, gambling and general immorality meets with very poor support in this Regiment and I am proud to say that Woodruff County boys are coming clean with good soldier conduct as best evidenced by the fact that not a single offense greater than being late to a formation or some similar offense and precious few of those.
In other words Company A is making good.
