TRANSCRIBED FROM THE DAILY BEACON HERALD JUNE 11, 1918 P. 1
Darling Parents:
I have only a minute, but will write you a farewell to America. I have worked day and night since I arrived here Sunday noon and will be up all night tonight. We sail in the morning at 4:30. We have had only two days to get ready, while others have ten to fourteen days. Everybody here is praising us on being so well equipped and disciplined, and really know what to do. I am in charge of 275 men. Have issued $40,000 worth of property to them.
I am so tired I can hardly go. Will be glad when we are on board. Will then get a rest.
Well, if you haven’t known before, I will tell you now since I am going, that I appreciate my dear parents as much as any boy possibly could. I know you have done your very best by me, and hope that in the end you won’t be disappointed in me. I am going to do my duty as a man of a free country, and Lord willing, I will see you again.
Goodbye. Love from an appreciative son. Love to all.
My address is Lt. B. S. Jackson, Co. 2, Beauregard Automatic Replacement Draft, Camp Merritt, N. J.
NOTES: This letter was written by B. S. Jackson.
