Editor News:
I will drop you a few lines as I am an old reader of your paper. I have been in the army five months to-day, and have learned a whole lot about the world. Went to Camp Pike July 22, and was sent to Camp Lee, Va. July 26 where I remained until October when I was sent to Camp Upton, N.Y. After remaining here about a week we sailed for France October 27, arriving here November 9. We had a fine trip, and brought 1800 head of horses. From the coast I was sent to Valdahon, France remaining there two weeks and then came to Epinal, been here two weeks today.
It has rained most every day since we have been at Epinal. Don't expect to be here long, but think we are going over into Germany. Harry Harp and I saw Fay Stone at Valdahon. He is a member of the Springdale Co. We are not far from the battle front. We get plenty to eat, have stone buildings to stay in. Have been to Epinal twice on detail. Like my officer fine. We have about 275 men in our company, and quite a lot of them are from good old Arkansas, where the red apples grow.
I am a son of John M. Johnson, residing near Mayfield. Hope everybody will have a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Loy Alfred Johnson,
16th Vet. Hospital Unit A.E.F.
NOTES: Johnson was born at Drakes Creek, Arkansas on September 11, 1893 and died on May 23, 1969. He is buried in the Hindsville Cemetery in Hindsville, Arkansas.
