TRANSCRIBED FROM THE ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT JUNE 5, 1918 P. 7
Got in yesterday from our fifth trip in France. As yet I have only one letter from you and one from Dad. Hope to get more in today’s mail. We had a nice trip this time, having been only 21 days. The transports (CENSORED) and (CENSORED), accompanied us this trip. We carried the (CENSORED) of Vancouver, Wash. Our stay in (CENSORED) was limited to four days, so none of us got ashore. Had a little scare a day out of (CENSORED) on the return trip. It was early in the morning, and the (CENSORED) began by firing on what looked to be a periscope. The destroyers soon followed and dropped about 30 depth charges in the vicinity of the suspicious object. If it was really a submarine I am sure we got it.
I was in sick bay with the mumps about half the trip over. I returned to duty when we were five days at sea. Constant good weather made my confinement all the more irksome.
I have a little request to make of you. I want you to send me the following books if you haven’t sold them; Latin, High School English, algebra, Unites History and ancient history. The Latin and algebra are the most important. We often have spare time which I think could be profitably used in that way.
Today is Memorial Day, and, of course, there will be celebrations of all kinds. I am thinking of going to Coney Island, but I don’t know yet just what I will do. Of one thing I am certain we are going to have a swell dinner on ship.
Tell all the kids hello for me, and write soon. I have several more letters to write before I leave the ship today, so I will conclude, hoping this finds you in the best of health.
NOTES: This partial letter was written by Stuart Jones to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Jones of Little Rock, Arkansas. He joined the Navy when the U. S. entered the war in 1917.
