TRANSCRIBED FROM THE JONESBORO DAILY TRIBUNE FEBRUARY 25, 1918 P. 1
Great Lakes, Ill., Feb. 22, 1918.
Dear Friend:
I will drop you a few lines and let you know that I am getting along fine, and I sure do like the navy. I hope that this will find you all O. K. Well, how is everything in old Jonesboro. Well, I will say that I sure like the navy I took your advice and took up cooking and I was made a second class cook. I haven’t heard from home or from my friends for a long time, so I wish you would do me a favor and have this letter published in the Jonesboro papers, and if they will not write me up for nothing I will pay them whatever it is. I want to put in the papers that Mathis Jones of Bay, Ark., wants to hear from all his friends, so that he can write to all when he gets to France. I expect to leave here about the 15th or the 20th of March and go straight across, so I would like to hear from the boys and girls so that I can let them know how France looks My address is W. M. Jones, Camp Ross, Co., Great Lakes, Ill.
I sure enjoy this life. I have gained about 38 lbs. since I joined the navy. I have put in for a furlough, but I do not know if I will be able to get it or not. I hope that the papers will put this letter in for me so that my friends in Bay, Ark., will know how much I like them to write to me. Don’t forget to do this for me.
I remain your friend,
W. M. Jones,
Camp Ross, Co. Q. Great Lakes, Ill.
NOTES: W. Mathis Jones was writing to the Naval Recruiting office in Jonesboro. He was from Bay, Craighead County, Arkansas.
