TRANSCRIBED FROM THE WEEKLY SOLIPHONE, AUGUST 8, 1918, P. 7
My Dear Mother:
I have something important to tell you. So please do not worry. I am in a good hospital and am under care of expert doctors and nurses. I was wounded in the left leg just two days ago by a Boche machine gun, but it cost them the gun and the machine gun crew. Am doing nicely and am resting very easy. The ball passed all of the way through my leg and made a very ugly wound. Must close for this time.
Love,
Pvt. Karl Johnson
18 Co., 5th Reg., U. S. Marines
In France, Amer. E. F.
NOTES: (Written to his mother Mrs. A. J. Johnson. Johnson enlisted in the military in February 1917. Sent to France in 1917. He arrived before his 17th birthday.
