TRANSCRIBED FROM THE SPECTATOR NOVEMBER 8, 1918 P. 1
France, Sept. 28, 1918
Dear Mother:
Will write you a few lines as I have a few hours leisure time. This leaves me all O.K. and I hope it will find you all the same. I got your letter about the 15th of August, but haven’t had time to write. I also got yours and Monroe’s letter that you wrote when he was down there. Well, mama, as soon as you get this write to Monroe for me: I won’t have time.
Mama, I have been through a great battle and din’t get a scratch. Guess you saw it in the papers. I went over the top twice and we are in the trenches where the shells are bursting all around us. I hear one sounding now and I wonder where it is going to fall. They all fall short of us.
I got a letter from Tom. He said he was aiming to start over here by the 15th so I guess he’s over here by now.
Well, as I haven’t much time I will close, so bye, bye.
Private Andy Keaton,
Co. G. 357 Inf., American Ex Forces.
Tell all hello for me and don’t forget Albert and Winnie.
NOTES: Andrew William Keaton was born in Ozark, Arkansas on July 22, 1895 and died on November 11, 1973. He enlisted on February 23, 1918 and was discharged on June 21, 1919. He departed St. Nazaire, France on May 26, 1919 onboard the Huron. He was listed as a Corporal serving in Co. G 357 Inf. He was writing to his mother Sarah Keaton.
