TRANSCRIBED FROM THE MENA WEEKLY STAR, OCTOBER 21, 1918 P. 6
We were at Chauteau Thierry, the place I suppose you read so much about. We have air raids most every night but haven’t lost a man. Things look good for us. The Dutch hand us a sample of hardware right often but without any bad results. We had an attack last night but Fritz didn’t locate us. We have been all over England and France. France is a pretty country but not so beautiful as you have heard. The French are very sociably, but we can’t talk much to them. We have a nice camp here.
Tell everybody Uncle Sam is on the job and pulling some big stuff.
NOTES: This partial letter was written by Benjamin Lee Kimbrough to his mother Mrs. Julia A. Kimbrough. He was born on June 30, 1893 at Goodland, Oklahoma and died on November 20, 1967. He is buried in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hugo, Choctaw County, Oklahoma. He worked as a brakeman and switching with the Frisco Rail Road, Alton to Joplin, Missouri. He was described as being of medium height and build with brown eyes and dark brown hair.
