TRANSCRIBED FROM THE ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT AUGUST 10, 1918 P. 4
Dear Mother:
Its such a pleasure for your boy to write to mother this pleasant Fourth of July. What kind of a time did you all have? Fine, I hope, for I, myself, had a nice time. Speaking this morning and games and music this evening was indeed nice. Mother, we have had a good trip and have seen some awfully pretty places enroute. And I like this little town fine, but will leave here soon. But I do not mind the change at all. We get plenty to eat and a good place to sleep, and that makes things very pleasant.
Mother, when you write me, tell me all about the sweet baby. I hope the girl’s well and I hope all had a nice Fourth. I spent the day very pleasantly. We had lots of fun yesterday eve. We all went in bathing, and it was nice. Well mother, I want you to write me all the news, and don’t worry about me, for I will be all right.
NOTES: Garland A. Knight was writing to his mother, Mrs. Sarah Knight of Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born on May 1, 1899 in Illinois and died on July 31, 1975 in Pulaski County, Arkansas. He is buried in the Hicks Cemetery in Pulaski County. His military headstone identifies him as a PVT US ARMY serving in World War I. He was serving in Co. A 163rd Infantry in France.
