TRANSCRIBED FROM THE LOG CABIN DEMOCRAT SEPTEMBER 12, 1918 P. 4
Dear Homefolks:
Well, this is Monday, and we have landed in New Jersey, and you talk about a time we sure did have a good time.
We were on the road four days and nights. We stopped at all the large towns and the Red Cross gave us cigarettes, oranges, apples, peanuts, candy and everything that was good. We had a good place to sleep every night.
We passed through some of the finest states, especially Illinois. I am crazy about Illinois. It is some smooth country and lots of pretty girls. The state of New York is some pretty itself. Camp Merritt is a much prettier camp than Camp Pike. The climate here makes me think of early spring time there. We have three of the finest lieutenants I have ever seen yet. They came here with us. They are as folly as they can be. Our lieutenant told us yesterday that he did not think we would ever get to France. Germany is wanting peace some bad.
Tell Mose and papa to take good care of that Chevrolet, I want to take a tour when I come in. Well, tell all I said hello and I am closing for this time. Love to all,
Carl Martin.
