“We are the first armored Cruiser to be fitted out to bring back troops---a book published on this ship for the benefit of the soldiers, tells of our nine round trips, with sixty transports that brought over 15,000 troops since last July. Some record, for a lot more than 5,400 miles. I do not know how long we will stay over here, not very long though, I am sure.”
NOTES: This partial letter was written by Dewey Martin of Hamburg, Arkansas to his sister, Miss Fannie Martin of Mississippi. Martin was serving onboard the USS North Carolina.
