TRANSCRIBED FROM TH POCAHONTAS STAR HERALD FEBRUARY 14, 1919 P. 7

Miss Tula Johnson,
Delaplaine, Ark.
Dear Sister:
I will write you a line or two today, as I haven’t heard from you for some time. This leaves me fine and dandy and just as fat as a pig. I never was in better health in my life.
We have had a good rest after a long hike. We hiked over two hundred miles, so you can guess we were pretty tired.
We had a great time Christmas. The chaplains gave us nine boxes of chocolates, three and one half packages of cookies, one half package of cigarettes and two bars of toilet soap. The boys put on a pretty good show Christmas afternoon.
I had a letter from George a day or two ago. He said he had been sick, but was getting better. He also asked me if I had seen Joe or John, and you tell him I haven’t seen either of them or heard from them lately. I met Joe up on the front the 26th of September, and had a letter from brother John, but he wrote from France, the letter went back to the States and then came over here again. It took about three months to get it. Do you all hear from him, and where is he now?
I have been in Germany for almost a month. We crossed the Masel river on the morning of Dec. 3rd, and went into Germany and have been here ever since. We have been stopping in a small town by the name of Herschbraich. I don’t suppose it is on the map, but we are but a short distance from Ademan.
Well, sis, how is mother? Tell her I hope it wont be long before I will be home to see her, and I sure will be glad to see all of you.
Have you had much snow over there yet? We had four or five inches of snow over here a few days before Christmas and it sure was nice and white on Christmas.
I guess you see George often, and you can tell him how I am getting along. I haven’t had a letter from my girl for some time and I am a little worried about her. Ha! Ha!
Well, I don’t know much to write, and guess I will quit for this time.
As ever, your brother,
Oscar L. Martin,
M G Co., 47th Inf., A. E. F.
NOTES: Oscar Lee Martin was born on July 23, 1889 in Solgohacia, Arkansas and died on February 4, 1969. He is buried in the Elmwood Cemetery in Morrilton, Arkansas.
