TRANSCRIBED FROM THE PINE BLUFF DAILY GRAPHIC AUGUST 23, 1918 P. 6
We had a nice trip across but it wasn’t so nice coming back for we were in several storms and they are not a desirable thing to be in mid-ocean. We wasn’t bothered with the subs. Only sighted one on our way back. We had 29 wounded soldiers with us this trip and thep sure oculd tell some exciting stories. One said that if a man could live through the first hour without being scared to death he would make it alright. They said they handed the prisoners they captured a tough package. Some of the prisoners were captured and given to some some of them to take to the guards, two miles off. They were told to be back in 5 minutes. They say they made it back but the prisoners did not need guards when they got through with them.
NOTES: Andrew J. Ware was writing to J. A. Maxwell. He was born on June 26, 1888 in Prescott, Arkansas and died on February 25, 1979 in Houston, Texas. He served in the Navy for 20 months during World War I. At the time of the letter Maxwell was serving on the USS Lexington.
