TRANSCRIBED FROM THE NEWARK JOURNAL JUNE 7, 1917 P. 1
Mr. Editor:
Allow me a little space in the paper. I take the Journal and enjoy reading the many lines of good lines from the country which is my home. I have been here almost a year and like Virginia fine but there is no place like old Arkansas.
As June 5 is registration day there is likely to be several of the boys have to leave home to be called to the colors later and maybe see service in France. The army is not a bad place, but there will likely be some read hardships to bear during the war. But as we have always, and always will, stand by our President, let us get together and stand up for our rights and make Germany hard to catch.
I am very proud of my service in the army. If they call for me I am ready and willing to go and hope the rest of the boys from home and elsewhere feel the same way. Don’t fail to register boys, the country needs you.
Well, Mr. Editor, if this happens to miss the wastebasket I will try to do better next time.
Please change my address from 6th Co., to C. A. S. D.
Ben Mayhue,
C. A. S. D. Ft. Monroe, Virginia
NOTES: Benjamin A. Mayhue was born on October23, 1896 and died on November 18, 1961. He is buried in the Shady Grove Cemetery at Bald Knob in White County
