TRANSCRIBED FROM THE ARKANSAS GAZETTE OCTOBER 21, 1918 P. 6
He and about three other men of his squadron have been doing almost everything that his bunch have accomplished lately.
I have spent the greater part of the evening packing his things to be sent back to the states. I must say that such work isn’t pleasant business for anyone. The night before he was killed we were talking of the heavy losses our squadron had suffered during the drive and he told me what to do with all his valuables, letters, etc.
After telling me all those things and then his time coming the next day. It certainly went far under the skin with me. I am going to take double chances to avenge him.
NOTES: This partial letter was written by Lt. Tom McAteer. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. McAteer of Fort Smith. He was born on January 1896 in Tennessee. In the first paragraph McAteer is referring to ace pilot Wendel Robertson and in the second and third paragraphs he is referring to the death of Lt. Henry G. Armstrong on October 7.
