Dear Aunt and Family:
I will try to answer your letter which I received. I was sure glad to hear from you as this was the first letter I have had from the states. I am glad to hear you are all well. I am getting along just fine. I like this country better every day, but it is nothing like the dear old U.S. Well, I have been out of the states two months; leaving the first part of August. I would like to let you know just where I am, but I cannot. However, it is a nice little village. These French people like the Americans. We have the best time in the world. There is one thing they believe in and that is good houses. All the houses are built of stone, and are built for the people to live in one part and the stock or animals in the other. There are a great many sights to be seen. Some buildings here were erected 600 or 700 years ago. A tower here in this village was built during the reign of Charles the -------. Well, I would like to tell you everything, but I will have to keep it until I come back home. I will close. This makes the third letter I have written to you. Write soon.
Your nephew,
John
Supply Co., 154th Inf. via New York.
NOTES: John D. McClain was writing to his uncle and aunt, Judge and Mrs. W. D. McClain. He was serving in Co. E.
